Guidelines for everyone who takes part.
Tour Articles is a place for first-hand travel knowledge. These guidelines apply to contributors, readers leaving experiences, and anyone else who takes part in the journal.
The standard
Write what you know from experience, say clearly what you do not know, and treat the people and places in your story with the same care you would want for yourself. Everything below follows from that.
Be truthful
- Write from experience. A story should come from a journey you actually made. Do not present research, imagination or another person's account as your own.
- Be specific. Say when you went and what has changed since. Prices, routes and opening hours go out of date; a date helps the reader judge what still applies.
- Disclose anything that could bias you. Free stays, press trips, gifted experiences, paid work and personal relationships with a business must be stated in the story, near the relevant detail.
- Correct mistakes openly. If you discover an error in work that has been published, tell the editors rather than editing around it. Corrections are handled through our commitment.
Write for the reader who will go
A useful story leaves the reader better prepared. Include the things that decide a journey: how you got there, what it cost, how hard it was, what you would do differently, and who the place is not suitable for. Do not omit a difficulty to make a place sound more appealing.
Be honest about safety and access. If a route is exposed, a path is unmarked, a town is not accessible for a wheelchair, or a place should not be visited in a particular season, say so plainly.
Respect people and places
- Ask before photographing people, especially children, and respect a refusal. Do not publish identifying details about private individuals without their consent.
- Do not stereotype or sensationalise. Write about communities as they are, not as a backdrop for a traveller's story.
- Protect fragile places. Do not publish precise locations of vulnerable wildlife, sacred sites or places that would be damaged by a crowd. Do not encourage trespass, illegal access or ignoring local rules.
- Leave no trace. Do not present irresponsible behaviour as an adventure worth copying.
Keep it original
Only submit work you have the right to publish. Do not copy text or photographs from another source, and credit quotations, data and images that are not yours. Machine-generated text may be used as a tool, but it must not be presented as first-hand experience and it does not replace the contributor's own reporting.
Keep it civil
There is no room here for hate speech, harassment, threats, doxxing, sexual content involving minors, or content that encourages violence or self-harm. Disagreement about a place, a route or a recommendation is welcome; attacks on the person who wrote it are not.
Reader experiences
Experiences left under a story should describe your own visit. Rate honestly, explain what shaped your view, and do not use the space for advertising, personal disputes or identifying other readers. We may moderate, shorten or remove an experience that breaks these guidelines.
How moderation works
Everything submitted for publication is reviewed by an editor before it appears. Publication is not automatic, and an editor may ask for changes or decline a piece that does not meet these standards. Published work can still be corrected, updated or withdrawn when new information warrants it.
If you see something that breaks these guidelines, write to community@tourarticles.com with the page address and a short explanation. We review reports and may remove content, request changes, restrict an account or, where the law requires it, involve the relevant authorities. If you believe a moderation decision was wrong, reply to the decision message and ask for it to be reviewed again.
Thank you
These guidelines exist so that a reader can trust what is published here, and so that the people and places in our stories are treated well. If you are unsure whether something belongs, ask us before publishing: hello@tourarticles.com.
