What we use, and why
Cookies are small pieces of data stored by your browser. The journal uses only the cookies needed to run the site and to honour choices you make. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking.

Local storage
Your cookie choice is saved in your browser's local storage under the key ta-cookie-consent, not in a cookie. It records whether you allowed optional analytics and when you made the choice. It stays until you clear your browser data or change the setting here.
Optional analytics
We do not currently load an analytics script. If we introduce one, it will be used only to understand which stories are read and how the site is used, never to build an advertising profile or follow you across other sites. It will run only when the analytics setting is switched on.
Your choice
Strictly necessary cookies cannot be switched off because the site cannot work without them. Optional analytics are off by default. You can allow them with Accept all or keep them off with Essential only. Both choices are valid, and neither limits what you can read.
To change or withdraw your choice later, use the Change cookie settings button above or the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page. If you withdraw permission, we stop using analytics from that point; it does not affect anything that happened while permission was in place.
Managing cookies in your browser
Every browser lets you view, block and delete cookies. Blocking essential cookies will prevent sign-in and may stop the site from remembering your language. If you clear your browser storage, your cookie choice is cleared too and we will ask again on your next visit.
Changes to this notice
We will update this page whenever the cookies we use change. The date at the top of the page shows when it was last revised. If a change affects a choice you have already made, we will ask you again rather than assume your permission.
